The Nine Network of Public Media is Leading a Bold National Initiative funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting to Address the Dropout Crisis in America

The National Initiative

The Nine Network of Public Media is leading the national initiative, which brings together for the first time teachers, parents, students, local leaders and major national partners working with trusted public media organizations in a community-centered approach to the dropout crisis. The multifaceted, five-year initiative is focused on building the knowledge, understanding, collaboration and resources required to improve high school graduation rates.

The initiative includes public television and radio stations in 20 Hub markets across the country as well as national partnerships with America's Promise Alliance, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and the National Center for Media Engagement (NCME), which is supporting additional public media engagement activities in 36 states.

Each of the Hub stations, including the Nine Network, will focus on dropout prevention and recovery, working in partnership with schools, agencies and organizations at the community level. Much of the focus will be on creating multi-platform content, implementing education resources, and developing interactive learning tools and experiences, particularly for middle- and high-school students. Hub stations will also build collaborative networks of organizations in their communities and will create new pathways for mentors and volunteers to become involved in solutions.

In St. Louis, the Nine Network will benefit from the strong journalistic support of the St. Louis Beacon and St. Louis Public Radio to tell our community's stories. We will also work directly with young people, helping them learn how to tell their own stories of the dropout crisis by building their digital storytelling skills through the Nine Academy.
