East St. Louis receives $2.1M under Operation AmeriCorps
Recently, the Corporation for National and Community Service announced East St. Louis is one of 10 communities nationwide to become a part of Operation AmeriCorps initiative.
The initiative will work with local community partners to provide in- and out-of-school summer services to children in 7th, 8th and 9th grade.
“I salute East St. Louis for its visionary program that will have a significant impact on the community and its young people,” CNCS CEO Wendy Spencer said.
The federal agency’s investment includes $1.3 million in AmeriCorps funding over two years. This federal investment is projected to generate an additional $379,544 in local funds, bringing the total two-year investment of federal and local funds to more than $2.1 million.
Benefits that will be available as part of the AmeriCorps initiative include in-class assistance and personalized tutoring and mentoring. Members will be able to focus in on individual students to ensure they are achieving their full potential. Detailed attention to students will warrant more opportunity for improving academic achievement and college and career planning.
