During the 2011-12 school year, the Nine Network connected 114 students and 3 teachers at Gateway STEM High School to the StoryCorpsU College Readiness Curriculum.
The curriculum is a yearlong college readiness program designed for students in grades 9 – 12 and aligned with the Common Core Standards. Teachers at Gateway used the curriculum to teach AVID students the power of their own voice, giving them the skills necessary to articulate their aspirations, master public speaking, and adopt critical listening. Students also practiced college and career readiness skills such as learning to communicate information in a well-structured, audience-appropriate manner and writing for a range of tasks, purposes and audiences.
50 new freshmen are currently learning the StoryCorpsU curriculum at Gateway.
The StoryCorpsU pilot was introduced during the 2011-12 school year in 19 classrooms in St. Louis, Washington D.C. and New York. The program, delivered in a classroom by teachers trained and supported by StoryCorpsU staff, is comprised of 24 lessons divided into three units: Where We’re From, Who We Are, and Where We’re Going.
Chelsey explains how StoryCorpsU allowed her to have a closer relationship with her teacher. She mentions how the program has given her the confidence to become a positive role model for her peers and siblings.
“I shared my feelings with everybody, I considered them my family, ” Aldijana speaks about how StoryCorpsU has helped her open up to new people and express her feelings.
“Everything I do today affects my future,” Beatriz discusses how StoryCorpsU has allowed her to see the importance of graduating high school and applying for college.
