Episode 4: Caring Crossing Guard Elizabeth Shumpert

Just like a mailman has a duty through rain, sleet, snow and sunlight, Elizabeth Shumpert takes her duty seriously as crossing guard for Our Lady of Lourdes in University City.

For more than 25 years, she’s made sure that the children have reached their school and path home safely, but more than that, she’s gotten to know the children who come her way.

“I love them all,” she said about the children who cross paths with her daily.

A caring, consistent adult can be a huge resource in the life of a child and sometimes a lifeline.

“Adult and peer supports provide students with the essential developmental resources they need to be ready to learn, to succeed in school, and to graduate from high school,” according to the 2014 Building a GradNation report.

Shumpert’s love for children is never more evident than her own family; she has eight children, 36 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren who helped her celebrate her 75th birthday last year.
